UW Pikes Beta Beta Chapter at the University of Washington
History

On September 15, 1909 a group of young University of Washington students met to organize a local social club. The name they chose was The Sagamore Club. During the period from 1910 to 1913 they met regularly in various places, holding monthly banquets and frequent dances.

Early in 1913 a committee was appointed to secure data on the national fraternities that did not have chapters on the university campus. Pi Kappa Alpha was the unanimous choice and negotiations were immediately begun with the Supreme Council of Pi Kappa Alpha.

Through the assistance and encouragement of the Alpha Sigma chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha, the Sagamore Club re-organized into the local fraternity on March 1st, 1913. For the name, the Greek initials of the old club name, the Sagamore Club, were used and they became Theta Sigma. Theta Sigma the became Beta Beta chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha on May 12, 1914.

Beta Beta enjoyed continued success until the Great Depression. The chapter found it difficult to operate its small chapter house and to maintain membership. Beta Beta closed its door until after World War II.

On May 21, 1946 a re-organization meeting was held and a request was made to reinstate the Beta Beta chapter at the University of Washington. During the 1940s and 1950s a search was made for permanent housing and in 1953 construction was begun on a property at 20th and 45th. The chapter again became silent in 1970 during the period of social unrest caused by the Vietnam War and because of uncontrolled drug usage by a large percentage of the student population.

Members of the Seattle Alumni Association began efforts toward re-colonization, for the second time, in 1976. The national fraternity had maintained its interest in the University of Washington, and in late December of 1978 they sent Brian Myers and Vic Balasi, members of the Pike chapter at the University of Illinois, to Seattle to begin re-colonization activity.

Alpha class was formally pledged in April 1979 and our popular spring fraternity football tournament began its first season in May of that year. The chapter continued operation without a chapter house until August of 1979 when we began operation on 18th street. The chapter met all requirements established for them and was re-chartered as Beta Beta chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity on May 30, 1981.

The success and growth of the chapter since the 1980s has prompted us to relocate twice. First, in 1994 the chapter moved from the three houses on 18th to a larger rental house on 21st. Then in 1999 Pikes purchased a new chapterhouse at 4515 21st Avenue NE, designed to hold 50 live-in members. Since that time we have had to make other rental arrangements in order to house our members as the chapter size has quickly risen close to 100 men.
